Abstract

What makes the difference? VOT realizations in foreign languages by Russian heritage language speakers and German speakers

The talk discusses crosslinguistic influence in the domain of highly automatic phonetic-phonological processes, as there is the articulation of plosive consonants. Based on the data of the large-scale MEZ project, we compare the realisations of plosives in foreign languages by adolescent Russian-German bilinguals and German monolinguals. Our analysis sheds lights on the vectors and strength of CLI between Russian and German and presents possible explanations for the transfer phenomena observed in foreign languages (English, French).  Therefore, the analytical perspective will be changed from general averaged data to individual values.
