In language acquisition research, the narrative abilities of children are examined with picture stories. The design of the pictures makes it possible to capture different areas in a targeted manner. The three protagonists in the picture, the bird, the fox and the fish, all have a masculine genus. Thus, in German terms like 'er' and 'der' are ambiguous and are avoided by adults, for example, in order to allow the listener a clear assignment with terms like 'the fox'.
