We would like to congratulate Kateryna Iefremenko, ZAS staff member in the DFG-funded CRC 1412 Register Project C03 "Real-time register comprehension in adolescent heritage speakers' languages", on the successful defence of her dissertation at the Institute for German as a Foreign and Second Language / Linguistics at the University of Potsdam. In her dissertation entitled "Word order in Turkish and Kurmanji Kurdish in Language Contacts: Evidence of Emerging Varieties?", she analyses the post-predicative position in Turkish and Kurmanji Kurdish spoken in Germany and Turkey, how contact with other languages can lead to new linguistic varieties and which factors influence the emergence of these.
Iefremenko's research results do not indicate the emergence of new varieties of Turkish and Kurmanji. The linguistic phenomena in multilingual speakers can be attributed to an equalisation of the language level or to internal dynamics within the monolingual variety.
