In an interview by Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) entitled "World Mother Language Day: The Language in the Family is the Basis", Dr. Nathalie Topaj, research associate in the research area "Language Development and Multilingualism" (FB2) and coordinator of the Berlin Interdisciplinary Network for Multilingualism (BIVEM), has her say.
She explains that the family language lays the foundation for an overall good language ability to learn other languages. Bilingual speakers have, among other things, advantages such as a better working memory, a more pronounced attention control and cognitive abilities, as well as a good ability in language reflection and analysis.
