Abstract

Exceptional scope indefinites and disjunction lack structurally parallel universal and conjunctive counterparts (e.g., Fodor and Sag 1982, Rooth and Partee 1982). On the extant approaches to alternatives and strengthening, this fact has significant repercussions for what inferences indefinites and disjunction are predicted to be able to give rise to. Crnic (2023) explores some of these predictions in the domain of donkey anaphora. This talk attends to further puzzling patterns involving indefinites and disjunction that can be derived as a consequence of the interaction of their exceptional scope and strengthening.
