Linguistics Olympiad 2022

Two medals for the German team at the IOL!

For the first time, German participants bring home two medals and a certificate of honor from the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2022.

Merlin Fischer won a silver medal at the International Linguistics Olympiad 2022. Réka Amélie Wagener can enjoy a bronze medal. In addition, Michał Boroń was awarded an Honorable Mention certificate. Congratulations!

Both Merlin Fischer and Michał Boroń have already received honorable mentions at last year's IOL. Merlin Fischer is currently a student at the Wentzinger Gymnasium in Freiburg; Michał Boroń is a student at the Heinrich Hertz Gymnasium in Berlin. The winner of the bronze medal, Réka Amélie Wagener, is a student at Evangelisches Gymnasium Siegen Weidenau in Freudenberg (NRW).

Also on the German team were: Jacqueline Maria Guitu (Königin-Katharina-Stift Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg), Seraphina Laske (Sächsisches Landesgymnasium Sankt Afra zu Meißen, Dresden, Saxony), Philipp Lörcks (Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium, Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate), Marie Mattutat (Gymnasium am Tannenberg Grevesmühlen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Daniel Pahi (Dürer-Gymnasium, Nuremberg, Bavaria).

Together with about 200 participants from all over the world, they solved puzzles in an individual competition and a team competition. The overall results can be found on the Website of the IOL.

This year again, Germany was able to send two teams, Team Germany Umlaut and Team Germany Eszett to the International Linguistics Olympiad in Castletown on the Isle of Man. They were received in advance in Berlin by Dr. Nathalie Topaj (Chair of the Board of the German Linguistics Olympiad Support Association) and Dr. André Meinunger (ZAS) and trained with the support of last year's bronze medal winner, Louis Cho. The stay in Berlin as well as the trip to Isle of Man were financed by the Leibniz Association. The multi-stage pre-selection process started back in February and was led by Prof. Dr. Kilu von Prince (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) with the support of Dr. Nathalie Topaj and other committed cooperation partners.

Results of the 2nd round

The second round is finished, the results have been sent. There were two weeks to solve three difficult puzzles this time. 28 participants managed to submit their solutions in time. Of these, 11 will move on to the next and final round of DOL, where we will select the teams for German participation in IOL. Congratulations!

Results of the 1st round

The first round has been completed and the results have already been sent out. A total of 98 students from 14 German states participated. Of these, all those who scored at least 58 out of 62 points, a total of 33 students, will advance to the second round.

We hope that even those who did not advance will have enjoyed participating and continue to enjoy languages and linguistics. Next year there will be another opportunity to participate in the Linguistics Olympiad!

Selection process 2022

Conditions of participation: All students from schools in Germany who have not yet enrolled for studies and are at least 14 years and less than 20 years old on the opening day of the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) are eligible to participate. The tasks do not require any prior technical knowledge. Prior registration is not necessary.
