The German Linguistics Olympiad 2024, organised by Nathalie Topaj (Research Area Language Development & Multilingualism) and André Meinunger (Research Area Syntax & Lexicon), entered its final round from 9-11 May.
In the final round with 19 students from various German states, Leonard Kottisch from Lower Saxony came out on top with 88.5 out of a possible 99 points and took first place. Second place went to Lennart Zenker from Thuringia, closely followed by Daniel Pahi from Bavaria.
The best eight participants will represent Germany at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2024 in Brazil.
In addition to the final competition round, the programme also included contributions from guests such as Boris Iomdin and Aleksandr Berdicevski, both jury members of the International Linguistics Olympiad, and the former director of the ZAS Manfred Krifka, who had interesting insights into Oceanic languages. The impressive achievements of the students were honoured by ZAS Director Artemis Alexiadou at a festive closing ceremony. The students also had the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the laboratories and visit the Humboldt Forum.
We congratulate all participants and wish them lots of fun and success at the IOL in Brazil!
