Unusual Relatives: Free Relatives and Free Adjuncts in Turkish

Abstract

Turkish has two types of Free Relatives: a nominalized and a non-nominalized type. This talk will claim that neither type is a genuine Free Relative. The nominalized type is actually a "Light-headed Relative", with a silent pronominal head, while the non-nominalized type is a correlative, thus also involving a pronoun. The latter, non-nominalized type of Free Relatives will be distinguished from Free Adjuncts, which appear to be similar at first glance.
