I will present findings from two longitudinal studies of the bilingual development of children in the United States who are raised in Spanish-speaking homes. The data cover the age range from 22 months to 12 years. The data provide a description of general patterns and individual differences in heritage-host language bilingual development. The data also identify sources of influence on those general patterns and on individual differences. The findings have implications for parents, teachers, researchers, and for policy with respect to children from immigrant families.
