The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1412 'Register: Language Users' Knowledge of Situational-Functional Variation' is a joint research project of the Humboldt-University Berlin (HU) and the Leibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS). Currently 15 sub-projects at the Humboldt-University of Berlin and the ZAS investigate intra-speaker variation driven by situational and functional factors at all levels of language, and focusing on the language user's register knowledge and its relation to other types of linguistic knowledge. It is funded by the German Research Council DFG since 01.01.2020.
Within the Integrated Graduate School, we offer up to four fellowships for Postgraduate Researchers who want to pursue or are already pursuing a Ph.D. relating to the research program of the CRC, or want to explore topics relating to the CRC within their Ph.D. research. The Integrated Graduate School serves the fellows, the Ph.D. students, working the CRC and also early career postdocs in the CRC. The leaders of the CRC Integrated Graduate School are Uli Sauerland (ZAS) and Richard Waltereit (HU).
The starting date can be February/March 1st, 2020 or any later first day of a month during 2020. The fellowship can have a duration of between three and twelve months. Remuneration is EUR 1,365 per month tax-free, but fellows will need to purchase health insurance. The fellowship can be used to prepare for a Ph.D. researcher position within the CRC, but can also be used to carry out a self-contained research project on the topic of the CRC. In either case, the prospective fellow must identify a research project in the CRC that they primarily will connect to and ideally contact a PI of that project at the time of application. The fellows are furthermore expected to participate in the training opportunities of the Graduate School, in particular methods schools, mentoring, and peer-to-peer networking events. The research projects within the CRC and PIs are the following:
Applicants who are not yet registered in a Ph.D. program must have completed their M.A. by the planned start date. Applicants should name other research qualifications relevant to the planned research. The Integrated Graduate School aims to strengthen the diversity of the CRC and so members of groups traditionally underrepresented in German academic leadership positions are especially encouraged to apply.
The Humboldt University is a one of Germany's leading universities, as confirmed by its recent reselection for the top-tier of funding within the German Excellence Initiative. Specifically for linguistics, HU has recently been ranked, in 2019, 1st in Germany and 33rd in the world.
The ZAS is an university-independent, research institute within the Leibniz Association and a well-known international center for linguistic research. Both institutions are located in downtown Berlin, which has been ranked 13th out of over 200 in a recent international quality of living survey.
Applications must be submitted via e-mail and include the following items, preferably in a single PDF:
